MUD FEVER, GREASY HEEL, PASTERN DERMATITIS, RAIN SCALD – AREN’T THESE THE SAME THING?

The short answer to this question is yes. Mud Fever, Greasy Heel, Equine Dermatitis, Pastern Dermatitis, Rain Scald, Rain Rot, Mud Rash and Scratches are all names for the same thing – an infection caused when the bacteria Dermatophilus congolensis enters the horse’s body – usually through broken skin. While these terms refer to the same condition, rain scald is often used when the issue occurs on the horses back or hindquarters. And because the cause is the same, the treatment is too, which is where our Mud & Rain remedy comes in.

    UNDERSTANDING THE CONDITION

Regardless of what the condition is called in your neck of the woods, the cause and the symptoms are the same. The bacteria that cause the condition lives in wet and muddy conditions, and while it is always present, it only causes a problem when it gets into the horses body. This is usually through broken skin, often the result of cuts, cracks and abrasions due to the skin softening when constantly damp.

Once inside, the bacteria cause symptoms such as inflammation, oozy scabby sores and in severe cases swelling and lameness. For more on managing this condition, read our guide to preventing and managing Mud Fever / Greasy Heel and rain scald.

USING OUR MUD & RAIN REMEDY

Our Mud & Rain remedy is a professionally formulated, oral remedy designed to support a normal immune response. Unlike traditional methods that focus on managing the external symptoms, our remedy works from the inside out, promoting healing without the need for painful and messy treatments.

NO STING, NO MESS, NO STRESS

Dosing with our Mud & Rain remedy is straightforward and stress-free. It can be dosed directly into the horse's mouth or on a treat using our pump bottle or use our jerry can format to add remedy to feed or water troughs, making it a cost-effective solution for multiple animals. Read this blog post to find out the difference between our pump bottle and jerry can formats.

    MUD FEVER PREVENTION AND MANAGEMENT

For horses prone to these conditions, we recommend starting with a preventative dose once a week before the onset of wet weather as regular use can help to maintain healthy skin, making it harder for bacteria to find a way in. At the first sign of any trouble, increase the dosing frequency for 7-10 days to manage the emerging symptoms.

WHY CHOOSE OUR MUD & RAIN REMEDY

Our remedy offers several key benefits:

    • No Sting, No Mess, No Stress: Avoid the discomfort and risk associated with traditional treatments.
