  • How To Trough Dose Livestock – Your Questions Answered

by Fiona Lane May 07, 2025

Blog Post: How to Trough Dose Livestock. A practical guide to trough dosing for farmers. Learn how natural dosing works, how to use it across shared livestock troughs, and why it’s an easy and cost-effective way to support herd health.

    Key Highlights

    ·       Trough dosing is an easy and cost-effective way to support the health of cattle, sheep, pigs, chickens, alpaca, deer, and more.

    ·       One dosed trough can provide cover for all animals that use the trough without harming animals that don’t need to be dosed.

    ·       Remedy disperses evenly through water and only needs to contact a mucous membrane such as the tongue, gums or lips.

    ·       Add two or more remedies to the same trough to provide support for multiple health needs.

    Why Consider Trough Dosing?

Trough dosing is an easy, practical and cost-effective way to support the health of livestock including cattle, sheep, deer, pigs, chickens, llama or alpaca. Whether you’re dealing with seasonal issues like ticks, calving, and foot rot, or need to support specific animals through scours, poor condition or facial eczema, we’ve got a remedy that could help.

How Does Water Trough Dosing for Livestock Work?

The active ingredients in our remedies sit in a base of sweet glycerine, which uses the hydrogen molecules in the water to disperse throughout the trough. This dispersal method means the potency of the remedy stays the same, regardless of how full or empty the trough is.

The remedy only needs to contact a mucous membrane such as the tongue, gums or lips to activate. The body registers the active ingredients almost immediately, and each animal gets a fresh dose every time they visit the trough – regardless of how much water they drink.

One dosed trough will provide cover for every animal that drinks from that trough, making our remedies easy to use and cost effective.

Does It Work in Larger or Shared Troughs?

Yes. One capful of remedy will dose a 500L trough. If you’re using a 1000L trough, just double the dose.

Our remedies are specifically designed for use in a shared trough – making them an easy and cost-effective way to dose your whole herd.

If you run shared grazing or lease part of your land, we recommend speaking with other stock managers before adding remedies to shared water sources.

    What About Auto-Filling Troughs?

Our remedies are suitable for use in auto-filling troughs too. As the remedy disperses through the hydrogen molecules in the water, it will automatically dose any fresh water that is added to the trough.

Does the Trough Need Emptying Between Doses?

No. Sunlight naturally degrades the remedy over time, so there’s no need to empty and clean troughs between doses. Simply add a fresh dose every other day to keep your water trough topped up with active ingredients.

What if the Livestock Don’t Drink Much?

The active ingredients just need to make contact with a mucous membrane such as the tongue, gums or lips, so the quantity the animal drinks isn’t as important as how often they visit the trough.

Can I Use the Same Trough for Cows and Sheep?

Absolutely. Any animal that drinks from the trough will receive a dose.

What About Other Animals That Drink From the Trough?

Our remedies are 100% natural, they won’t harm animals that don’t need to be dosed – such as thirsty dogs, birds or any goldfish that live in the trough.

Can More Than One Remedy be Added at a Time?

Yes. Our remedies are designed to be used together or alongside vet-prescribed treatments. Many farmers rotate through seasonal combinations:

Or dose with additional remedies as required:

    ·       Fireworks Angel to take care of your herd when you can’t be there during storms, hunting or fireworks season

    ·       Drying Off Milk to support reduction of milk supply before calving

    ·       Cow Calm to support cows and calves during separation
