A life saver or prolonger - a happy dog again
Our darling MaddyDog was 15.5yrs old when diagnosed with Stage 2-3 kidney disease in Sept.2025. We tried her on the prescribed renal kibbles & wet foods, but after a few days on each bland food, she’d largely stopped eating & was vomiting regularly. Googling & 5star reviews brought us to Hippo & their Kidney & Liver Health (K&LH). We ditched the commercial foods & Maddy now eats five small homemade meals per day with added K&LH, I’ll attach the recipe in case it’s of any help. Maddy is enjoying her food again, her coat quality & energy levels have improved greatly. Vomiting rarely occurs, though I think starting small meals early (5:30am when she wakes) & ending late (8:00pm near her bedtime) has also helped. Feel for anyone else trying to help their ailing dog, this does seem a sustainable option, as Maddy does not appear lacking in any area of her diet.
This is the low phosphorus/protein recipe we have been following for a 10kg dog, having five meals per day, each as follows:
30g Boiled White Rice
6g Boiled then ground Free Range Chicken Breast
6g Boiled then ground Grass-Fed Venison Mince
25g Steamed Broccoli
6g Grated raw Carrot
1 squirt Hippo Kidney & Liver Health (for four of the five daily meals)
Water to mix & add fluid to her diet.
We batch cook each ingredient & freeze it till needed. Though quality meat costs seem high, this homemade diet is far less expensive than the prescribed diet & easy to prepare.
